{"id":94,"date":"2017-09-27T17:42:00","date_gmt":"2017-09-27T17:42:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/maximebernier.com\/?p=94"},"modified":"2025-05-15T17:44:19","modified_gmt":"2025-05-15T17:44:19","slug":"subsidies-are-bad-economics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/maximebernier.com\/fr\/2017\/09\/27\/subsidies-are-bad-economics\/","title":{"rendered":"Subsidies are bad economics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The U.S. Department of Commerce decision to impose a 220% levy on Bombardier&rsquo;s C Series planes is very bad news for the Canadian industry and workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Ottawa is responsible for giving Boeing ammunitions against Bombardier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The liberal government should never have given $372M in aid to Bombardier with undisclosed clauses that can be interpreted as a subsidy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsidies are bad economics, unfair for taxpayers and other companies, and inefficient when trying to solve international disputes. It&rsquo;s true that Boeing and other aircraft manufacturers also get subsidies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Canada will never win a subsidy race with economies 10 times bigger than we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&rsquo;s time to renegotiate an expanded ASU international treaty to limit government aid to aircraft manufacturers,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20191023095822\/https:\/\/goo.gl\/VX5FDk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as proposed by the MEI<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. Department of Commerce decision to impose a 220% levy on Bombardier&rsquo;s C Series planes is very bad news for the Canadian industry and workers.
